NUFF and NUFF Global June 1 -
10, 2007

On June 1st, 2007 talented young filmmakers from the Nordic countries and from
all around the world will gather in Tromsø, Norway to launch the Nordic Youth
Film Festival (NUFF) and its side-project NUFF Global.

This year’s festival is especially exciting because it will be held in
conjunction with World Environmental Day on June 5th. Tromsø has been chosen
to be the host of this world-wide day of environmental awareness, so it is
fitting that Nordic Youth Film Festival is also introducing NUFF Global - a
youth film competition focused entirely on climate change and global warming.

During the festival, participants will be able to watch films and take part in
workshops led by film professionals. The festival is planned and produced by
young people from the local youth culture house TVIBIT and in cooperation with
Tromsø International Film Festival. Both NUFF and NUFF Global are film
competitions, although the guidelines and rules differ.

NUFF competition guidelines

This competition is divided into three age groups: 15-17 years, 18-20 years,
and 21-25 years. All genres, formats, and lengths are allowed, but the films
must be produced between 2003 and the present. A pre-selection jury made up of
young people will select a number of films to be shown at open screenings at
Verdensteatret in Tromsø. During the festival a jury of film professionals
will see the films and select a winner in each age category. The winning films
will be shown at next year’s Tromsø International Film Festival, and the
directors will receive a free festival pass.

The deadline for the NUFF competition is May 1, 2007.

NUFF Global competition guidelines

Film idea competition: Films entered in this NUFF side-project must be related
to the topic of climate change. NUFF Global is comprised of two separate
competitions. The first is a film-idea competition. By November 15, 2006, the
last day to submit entries to this competition, NUFF Global had received 198
registered film ideas. Among those entries were 183 different film ideas from
all five continents and 28 different countries - from the Philippines to
Canada. The fact that NUFF Global had such a diverse international turn-out
will serve to fuel the fire in the fight against climate change. After sending
a selection of 100 entries to the panel of judges, the top 16 film ideas were
announced in December. These 16 ideas will each receive 30,000 NOK to put
towards bringing their film to life. A pilot of the film must be completed by
February 1, 2007, and the finished product has a deadline of April 1.

Film competition: In the meantime, NUFF Global is currently accepting film
entries in the film competition category. In order to be eligible for this
competition, the film cannot be made earlier than 2001, it must be 15 minutes
long or less, and the filmmakers must be between 18 and 30 years of age. The
deadline for the film competition is April 1, 2007, so we encourage young
filmmakers to find a camera, think creatively, and tell the world about your
climate change concerns through the powerful medium of film. More information
and applications can be found at the NUFF Global website: www.nuffglobal.net

Films from both the film idea contest and the film contest will be shown at
the Nordic Youth Film Festival (NUFF) in June of 2007 (visit www.nuff.no),
which is happening with support from the Minor Foundation for Major
Challenges, CICERO (Center for International Climate and Environmental
Research - Oslo) and the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø.

The Juries

There will be two separate juries during NUFF 2007 - one for NUFF films and
another for the films entered in the two NUFF Global competitions. So far,
four jury members have been chosen: Maria Ekerhovd, film producer from Bergen,
Daniel Alegi, filmmaker from Sweden/Italy, Pontus Hummelman, project manager
of Dvoted, Nina Dessau, writer, social economist, and political scientist, and
Henning Roselund, program director for Films from the North.

Film Camp/workshops

In addition to a distinguished panel of jury members, four film experts have
been chosen so far to lead workshops during Filmcamp at NUFF 2007: Svein
Andersen, the leader of Film Camp in Målselv, Hisham Zaman, director of the
2007 Tromsø International Film Festival’s opening film Vinterland, Paolo
Davanzo, director of Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles, and Linda
Hattendorf, director of the Norwegian Peace Film Award winner The Cats of
Mirikitani. The goal of the workshops during the NUFF workshops is to create
five short films in five groups in five days. The professional filmmakers will
help guide the participants through the process, and all film and editing
equipment is available from TVIBIT.
